Tranquil Klamath Lake
A Unique Ecosystem

Klamath Lake and its surrounding marshes, forests, and meadows serve as a refuge for hundreds of species of resident and migratory wildlife. Located in a relatively undisturbed, high desert region, the Klamath Basin is home to the largest wintering congregation of bald eagles in the lower forty-eight states, and is the largest stopover for waterfowl in the Pacific flyway.

Nestled in the shadow of pristine Crater Lake and fed by more than seventeen natural springs of astonishing beauty, Klamath Lake is the largest freshwater lake (125 square miles) in Oregon, draining a watershed of more than 3,800 square miles. Klamath Lake contains a wealth of minerals resulting from a thick layer of volcanic ash spewed over the Klamath Basin during the eruption of Mount Mazama seven thousand years ago. This bountiful supply of naturally occurring minerals in Klamath Lake nourishes the prodigious growth of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, which serve as the primary food source for the lake's abundant Daphnia pulicaria population.

Klamath Lake is an ideal environment for the flourishing of these extraordinary microalgae and zooplankton; organisms that play an important role in nourishing the lake's wildlife and maintaining its fragile ecosystem.
